A Clinical Study of Thyroid Nodules


Abstract
During the5 years of period, 95 patients with thyroid nodules was admitted and operated at department of surgery of Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jan. 1987 to Dec. 1991.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The sex distribution disclosed preponderance of female with ratio of 6.9 : 1.
2) The most common symptom and sign palpable nodule on anterior neek.
3) Benign nodules were prevalent it third and decades, malignant nodules in forth and fifth decades.
4) The duration of illess within 1 year was most common(58.8%)
5) The histopathologic classification of benign disease including of frequency were adenomatous goiter(61.1%), follicular adenoma(22.1%), Hashimoto's thyroiditis(6.3%), and Graves' disease(2.1%).
6) The location of nodules was 88.5% in unilateral and 11.5% in bilateral.
7) Benign nodules were treated by total lobectomy(85.0%), total lobectomy(25.0%) and subtotal thyroidectomy(25.0%) was common procedures.
8) The postoperative complication occured in 9 cases(9.5%) including 3 cases of transient hoarseness(3.2%), 2 cases of hematoma(2.1%), 2 cases of hypothyroidism(2.1%), and 2 cases of severe headache(2.1%). There was neither postoperative death
nor
thyroid crisis.
